    The Armenian Bird alphabet

Armenian Bird letters are a distinctive expression of Armenian calligraphy and the rich tradition of Armenian illuminated manuscripts. The first bird letter in Armenian manuscripts appeared in the middle ages in the 10th century and mainly used as initial letters of the texts. Their iconography mostly connected with Christian imagery, but researchers also reveal implicit trace of pagan culture.

The Armenian Bird alphabet, or trchnakir, is a tradition, that combines calligraphy, rich colors and intricate designs.

Do you know that the Matenadaran Museum-Institute in the capital of Armenia is one of the largest repositories of ancient manuscripts in the world. It was created on the basis of the collection of manuscripts of the Etchmiadzin Monastery nationalized in 1920.

The funds of Matenadaran include more than 17 thousand ancient manuscripts and more than 100 thousand ancient archival documents. Along with 13 thousand Armenian manuscripts, more than 2000 manuscripts in Russian, Hebrew, Latin, Arabic, Syriac, Greek, Japanese, Persian and other languages are stored here.

Armenian illuminated manuscripts form a separate tradition, related to other forms of Medieval Armenian art, but also to the Byzantine tradition. The earliest surviving examples date from the Golden Age of Armenian art and literature in the 5th century. Early Armenian Illuminated manuscripts are remarkable for their festive designs to the Armenian culture; they make one feel the power of art and the universality of its language.
